WAV

2 min readUpdated April 2026

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is an uncompressed audio file format developed by Microsoft and IBM, widely used for high-quality audio storage and professional audio production.

WAV files are known for their pristine audio quality because they store audio data without any loss of information (uncompressed). This means that a WAV file is an exact digital replica of the original analog sound wave, making it the preferred format for recording, Mixing, and Mastering in professional studios. Unlike compressed formats like MP3, WAV files retain all the nuances and details of the original recording, ensuring the highest fidelity throughout the production process.

The primary drawback of WAV files is their large file size, which can be significantly greater than compressed formats. This makes them less practical for streaming or casual listening on devices with limited storage. However, for archival purposes, delivering Master Recordings to DSPs, or for any stage of audio production where preserving sound quality is paramount, WAV remains the industry standard. It's the go-to format for ensuring that the sonic integrity of a musical work is maintained from creation to distribution.

When a mastering engineer receives a final mix from a mixing engineer, it will almost always be in WAV format to ensure no audio quality is lost during the mastering process. Similarly, artists typically upload WAV files to their distributors for optimal sound quality on streaming platforms.

melabel’s Music Files feature is designed to securely store and manage your high-quality WAV Master Recordings, ensuring your audio assets are preserved in their purest form for Distribution to DSPs and for future use.
