Sync License

2 min readUpdated April 2026

A Sync License (Synchronization License) grants permission to synchronize a musical composition and/or sound recording with visual media, such as film, television, commercials, video games, or online videos.

A Sync License is one of the most lucrative and sought-after licenses in the music industry. It is required whenever music is paired with moving images. Unlike mechanical or performance licenses, sync licenses are not compulsory; they must be negotiated directly with the copyright holders. This typically involves two separate permissions: one from the owner of the musical composition (the music publisher/songwriter) and another from the owner of the Master Recording (the record label/artist).

The fees for Sync Licenses can vary widely, depending on factors such as the prominence of the usage, the duration of the music in the visual media, the budget of the production, and the territories where the media will be distributed. Sync placements offer not only significant financial compensation but also invaluable exposure for artists and their music. Actively pursuing sync opportunities and having well-organized, easily licensable music is a key strategy for many artists and labels to diversify their income streams and reach new audiences.

When a popular song is used in a car commercial, the car company would need to obtain a Sync License from both the music publisher (for the composition) and the record label (for the Master Recording) to legally use the song in their advertisement.

melabel’s Music Contracts feature can help you manage and store your Sync Licenses, ensuring all agreements for using your music in visual media are properly documented and accessible, while Music Analytics can track the impact of such placements.
