Record Label
A Record Label is a company that manages the production, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, and promotion of sound recordings and music videos.
Historically, Record Labels have been the primary gatekeepers and investors in the music industry. Their role is comprehensive, encompassing talent scouting (A&R), funding recording sessions, manufacturing physical products (CDs, Vinyl), distributing music to retailers and digital platforms, and executing extensive marketing and promotional campaigns. In exchange for these services and financial investment, artists typically sign a Label Deal, granting the label ownership or control over their Master Recordings and a share of their revenue.
While the traditional power dynamic of record labels has shifted with the rise of independent artists and digital distribution, labels still offer significant resources, industry connections, and expertise that can be invaluable for an artist's career. They play a crucial role in breaking artists into the mainstream, securing major media placements, and building global brands. Record labels can range from multinational Major Labels to smaller, niche Independent Labels, each offering different levels of support and control.
When an artist signs with a Record Label, the label provides an Advance to fund the recording of an album, then handles all aspects of its release, from getting it on Spotify to promoting it on radio and TV, in exchange for a percentage of the royalties.
melabel provides independent artists with the tools to operate like a modern Record Label, managing their own Distribution, Marketing & Promotion, and Music Analytics, allowing them to retain more control and a larger share of their Royalties.
