Copyright

2 min readUpdated April 2026

Copyright is a legal right granted to the creator of original literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, giving them exclusive rights to use and distribute their work.

In the music industry, copyright is fundamental to protecting the intellectual property of creators. There are typically two main copyrights associated with a piece of music: the copyright in the musical composition (the melody, lyrics, and arrangement) and the copyright in the sound recording (the specific performance and production of that composition, also known as the Master Recording). These rights grant the owner exclusive control over how their work is reproduced, distributed, performed publicly, displayed, and adapted. This means that no one can use these works without the permission of the copyright holder, usually granted through a license.

Copyright protection arises automatically upon the creation of an original work and its fixation in a tangible medium (e.g., writing down a song, recording a demo). While registration with a national copyright office (like the U.S. Copyright Office) is not required for protection, it provides significant legal advantages, including the ability to sue for infringement and collect statutory damages. Understanding and actively managing copyrights is essential for artists and labels to protect their creative output, control its usage, and ensure they are properly compensated for their work.

If another artist samples your song without permission, or a company uses your music in an advertisement without a Sync License, they are infringing on your copyright. Having your copyright properly registered and understood allows you to take legal action to protect your work and claim damages.

melabel's Music Contracts feature helps you manage and store documentation related to your Copyrights, ensuring your Master Recordings and compositions are protected and properly attributed across all your Releases and Distribution channels.
